Lefton Lost Lights Collection, St. Croix, Maine

Built in 1857 on Dochet Island, the St. Croix Lighthouse, marking the international border of the United States and Canada, was one of the most remote lighthouses in America. It was listed on the official light list as the "first lighthouse in the First Lighthouse District" of the United States Lighthouse Service. Automated in 1957, it was abandoned by the Coast Guard. In 1976, a group of juveniles on the run from the law built a fire to keep themselves warm. Fueled by high winds, the fire got out of control and burned the lighthouse, destroying a vital part of America's maritime heritage.
