Lefton Lost Lights Collection, Cape Henlopen, Delaware

Completed in 1765, the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, one of the original 12 colonial lighthouses built in America, was for many years one of our nations best known landmarks. Built to last, it's fortress like walls were 69 feet high and 6 feet thick at the base. It had 8 levels, with windows at each level. At 115 feet above sea level, it's light could be seen for 17 miles out to sea. Erosion was a constant problem that threatened the lighthouse, and finally, by the 1920's, the erosion won. Despite a last ditch effort to save it, the lighthouse simply collapsed onto the beach below during a storm one early morning in 1926.
