The lighthouse was first lit in 1875, automated in 1945, and deactivated in 1960.  Currently the lighthouse is not operational, but is open to the public for tours.  The public has access to climb the tower, and visit the museum and gift shop.  The White River Lighthouse celebrated it's 125th anniversary July, 2000. It is open to the public from May through September.  Call (231) 894-8265 for more information or visit http://www.whiteriverlightstation.org/location.html for information on hours and location.

Captain William Robinson, his wife Sarah, and their children were keepers for the house from 1876-1923.  Having served 47 years as keeper, Captain Robinson holds the record for being the eldest keeper in Michigan.

The Lighthouse is natural in color made with limestone & brick with a black lantern in the shape of an octagon.  The existing quarters include the lighthouse, keepers quarters, an oil house, garage, and workshop.  The keepers quarters was built in 1876.  The quarters are 1.5 stories, built with the same kind of materials, and attached to the lighthouse.
